Professor Hartl is director of the “Cellular Biochemistry” research department at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry. Professor Hartl and his research team are researching the structure and functionality of chaperones. He is also concerned with the question of how toxic protein aggregates, which occur increasingly with age in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease, impair cell functions and is looking for strategies to prevent these diseases.
